What is LANAP?

The invention of the laser has revolutionized many medical fields, including dentistry. The LANAP protocol is a treatment for gum disease that uses a laser as an alternative to surgery, sutures, and downtime.

The LANAP protocol gives the potential to stimulate the growth of damaged parts of the gum tissue and mouth, which includes the potential for growth of new bone, regeneration of gums, and destruction of longstanding bacteria and disease. The LANAP laser protocol is also highly effective at saving failing or compromised dental implants.

By combining the right wavelength, the proper pulse durations, and a proven technique, the LANAP protocol delivers consistent, reproducible, regenerative results.

What are the benefits of LANAP?

Using the LANAP procedure to restore gum health can offer benefits for the patient experience and overall outcome. LANAP uses a special laser and specific protocol for addressing damaged tissue without compromising healthy tissue. The laser energy also stimulates the body’s natural healing response to regenerate new, healthy tissue. Other benefits include:

  • NO sutures
  • Less Post-op infections
  • NO cutting or use of a scalpel to remove diseased soft tissue
  • Less bleeding and swelling post-treatment
  • Faster recovery times
  • Less Pain
  • Less Sensitivity
  • Very little downtime
  • Less gum loss
  • Promotes regeneration of supporting gum tissues
  • Healing is faster & more comfortable than conventional surgery

LANAP can often alleviate the need for bone grafting and other more invasive oral surgical procedures. In many cases, patients can tolerate the treatments with only a local anesthetic, avoiding any risk associated with the use of anesthesia and other sedatives.

Am I a candidate for LANAP?

Before recommending laser dentistry using LANAP for gum disease, Dr. Baldwin will thoroughly evaluate the health and condition of your gums, teeth, and surrounding tissues. Most patients can be considered a candidate for this procedure and it is often a great alternative to traditional gum surgery for anxious patients.

How long does LANAP surgery take?

The LANAP surgery is completed in 2 visits, each lasting about 2 hours. Using a local anesthetic or dental sedation, Dr. Baldwin will treat one side of the mouth during each session. If splints are placed to secure loose teeth, we will provide care instructions for oral hygiene and diet restrictions. Most patients will experience only minor discomfort on the first day and mild swelling or discoloration of treated gum tissue. A soft diet is often recommended during the first few days.
