Dental Implant Process Truckee, CA

The Dental Implant Process

Since dental implants are the most advanced and sophisticated way to replace missing teeth, the entire process will take longer to complete than other replacement options. It involves a surgical procedure, months of healing time, and numerous visits to see Dr. Baldwin along the way. To qualify for teeth implants you will need to have enough bone structure to support the implant fixtures, be in good health, and be free of any oral health problems. We strongly recommend any patients that smoke to quit. Doing so will lower the risk of implant failure.

Consultation

Your dental implant journey will begin with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Baldwin. He will be examining your entire mouth and taking x-rays to determine if you qualify for them. Gum disease, tooth decay, and bone loss will not hinder your ability to qualify, however they will need to be addressed before the implants can be secured in the jaw bone. Please know that these additional services will increase the overall treatment time and cost.

Placement of the Implant Posts

Dr. Baldwin will perform the surgical procedure to place the implant fixtures in the jaw bone at his dental office in the Tahoe, CA area. A small incision will be made in the gums to access the bone at each location. The small implant screws are then drilled into place. Your gums will be closed up and left to heal. For the next three to six months, the fixtures will fuse with the jaw bone during a process called osseointegration. This makes them very stable and durable enough to secure the dental restoration.

Placement of the abutment

Once your fixtures are completely fused to the bone, you will have another minor procedure completed. Dr. Baldwin will open your gums back up to place an abutment on each dental implant. Your gums will be left to heal, typically about two weeks.

Attaching the Dental Restoration

The last step in the process is to have your new dental restoration secured to the implant fixtures. A dental crown will be attached to one dental implant if you are only missing one tooth. Several consecutive missing teeth will require a dental bridge that attaches to at least two dental implants. An entire row of missing teeth will require four to eight dental implants to secure a denture.
