Nobody loves going to the dentist. But for some people, it’s way more than just mild dislike. It’s actual fear. The kind that makes your palms sweat just thinking about the dental chair. The kind that makes you cancel appointments at the last minute and keeps you from getting the care you need. If that sounds like you, we want you to know something: you are not alone, and you are not broken.
Dental anxiety is incredibly common. Studies show that somewhere between 20% and 30% of people avoid the dentist because of fear. At Tahoe Dental Artistry, we don’t judge that. We work with it. Dr. Baldwin and our entire team have built our practice around making patients feel safe, heard, and in control.

Where Does Dental Anxiety Come From?
For most people, it starts with a bad experience. Maybe you had a painful procedure as a kid. Maybe a dentist wasn’t gentle or didn’t listen when you said you were uncomfortable. Those memories stick with you, and your brain learns to sound the alarm every time you walk into a dental office.
For others, it’s about feeling trapped or helpless. The chair tilts back, the light shines in your eyes, and someone is working inside your mouth. That vulnerable position can trigger real claustrophobia or panic.
And some of it comes from pop culture. Movies and TV shows have spent decades making root canals and extractions look like torture scenes. No wonder people are nervous.
What We Do Differently
At our Truckee office, we don’t expect you to just “get over it.” That’s not how fear works. Instead, we meet you where you are and give you tools to feel better.
- We talk: Before anything else, we sit down with you, sitting upright, no tools in sight, and have a real conversation. We ask about your past experiences, what specifically makes you anxious, and what would help you feel more comfortable. We listen without interrupting, and we never dismiss your feelings.
- You stay in control: We’ll agree on a stop signal, like raising your hand, and we promise to stop immediately if you use it. You can also ask us to explain everything before we do it, or you can ask us to stay quiet and just work. We’ll adjust to whatever helps you relax. You’re always free to take breaks, sit up, or reschedule if it’s too much.
- We offer comfort options: Numbing gel gets applied before any injections, so you barely feel the needle. We use topical anesthetics that work fast, and we go slowly. For patients with severe anxiety, we also offer gentle sedation options that help you relax deeply during your visit. You’ll be awake but calm, and many patients don’t even remember the procedure afterward.
Small Things That Make a Big Difference
We also pay attention to the little stuff. The room is warm and welcoming, not cold and clinical. We have blankets if you get chilly and music or TV to help distract you. We talk in a calm, steady voice and never rush you.
Dr. Baldwin also uses advanced technology that makes treatments faster and less invasive. Things like digital impressions (no goopy trays) and laser dentistry (less cutting, less bleeding) take a lot of the unpleasantness out of dental work.
You Don’t Have to Be Brave Alone
You don’t have to conquer your fear before you come in. We’ll help you through it. Whether you need to bring a friend, hold a stress ball, or schedule shorter appointments, we’ll find a way that works for you.
Many of our patients started out terrified and now come in with barely a second thought. Not because we fixed their teeth, but because we fixed their experience.
Ready to Take the First Step?
If dental anxiety has been keeping you away, we’d love to change that. Give us a call at Tahoe Dental Artistry, and we’ll set up a simple, no-pressure meet-and-greet. No exam, no treatment, just a chance to meet Dr. Baldwin, see the office, and talk about what would make you feel comfortable.
You deserve a healthy smile, and we’d be honored to help you get there, on your terms.
