Dental Implant FAQs

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a restorative solution for one or more missing teeth that replaces the tooth at the root. Dental implants can also hold a dental bridge or dentures for a more secure solution. Patients who have lost teeth due to gum disease, an injury, genetics, or tooth decay benefit from this treatment.

What do dental implants treat?

If you are missing a single tooth, one implant can replace it. Implant-supported bridges are used to replace multiple missing teeth, and whole arches of teeth require a full implant-supported denture.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

To determine if you are an ideal candidate for implant treatment, we will provide you with a full dental evaluation. We will assess the condition of your teeth, gums, and jaw to recommend the most appropriate solution for you.

Ideal candidates are in good general and oral health with adequate bone in the jaw. Candidates should also have healthy gum tissues free of infection. If you want dental implants but are concerned about your oral health, we offer treatments such as periodontal therapy and bone grafting to accommodate dental implants.

How do I take care of my dental implants?

Just like natural teeth, dental implants require at-home oral care and regular visits to our dental office. To keep your implants clean and free from infection, brushing and flossing regularly is important.

What food should I eat with dental implants?

Immediately following your implant treatment, you will need to avoid eating chewy or sticky foods. Foods like popcorn, chips, nuts, crackers, and candy should be avoided as these foods can get stuck and cause an infection. However, once your soft tissues have healed, you can resume a normal diet.

Do dental implants hurt?

Anesthesia is used during the dental implant procedure to numb the area. You may feel some pain after the procedure, but excessive pain is abnormal. Contact Dr. Baldwin if you are in pain for days after the procedure.

Can you receive dental implants immediately after a tooth extraction?

Sometimes it is possible to perform a tooth extraction and dental implant procedure in the same day. However, this is not the case for all patients. On the other hand, waiting too long to place a dental implant can make the procedure more difficult to perform.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer multiple benefits to patients who are missing teeth. Some benefits include:

  • Improved speech
  • Improved appearance
  • Improved oral health
  • Durability
  • Longevity

Placing dental implants can combat problems that arise from missing teeth, such as:

  • Overcrowding
  • Shifting teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Speech issues
  • Misaligned bite

Dental implants not only look great but can help your dental health in the long run.
